Centralising The Community

Finsbury Park, London
'The design aimed to strengthen the links between the community, park and gallery through the creation of a destination plaza at the centre of the park'

Finsbury Park is a large, 45 hectare urban park at the intersection of the three boroughs of Hackney, Islington and Haringey. The park is used for a large range of activites including sport, recreation, boating and music festivals.

The design was commissioned by Haringey Council and Furtherfield Gallery and aimed to strengthen the connections between the park, community and gallery whilst building upon the credentials outlined in the parks 2006 restoration.

The Design above built upon a wider group masterplan and aimed to create a central community hub within the park. This used the guidance of paths to unite the key destinations of the cafe, Victorian boating lake, playground and Furtherfield Gallery around one central plaza. This celebrates the parks unique qualities and forms both physical and visual links that hold people within the space through the use of innvative landscape features such as stepped seating.

Since the completion of this project Haringey Council has begun to draw up future plans including a number of these ideas such as the sculptural planting feature. The designs were also exhibited within Furtherfield Gallerys exhibition space in the park during November 2013.
