An Edible Landscape
Writtle College, Essex

The masterplan illustrates the formal geometric layout of the central campus quadrant. The design uses graded landscape forms as productive features across the landscape.

The above plan highlights the proposed sunken seating area outside the colleges restaurant. This is intended to become the new social hub of the college with extensive views across the edible landscape.

Above outlines the areas within the design that have the potential for educational lecturing. Productive areas are also highlighted that could be used for economic enterprises.

Set within a 220 hectare estate Writtle College is a land based education centre catering for both further and higher education. Established for over 120 years the college offers a range of subjects including design, horticulture, equine, agriculture and animal management. The campus contains of a central main campus and a number of periphery areas primarily made up of farms.
The project was centered around the Student Unions Green Campus Grant. This highligheted the need for a sustainable campus that has benefits environmentally and socially whilst providing a number of economic opportunities for the college.
In response to this the design was focused on the creation of edible enterprises and a unique educational landscape. Focused within the central quadrant of the main campus and drew upon the designs of Schumacher College, Villandry and Charles Jencks to create a series of raised edible forms that contributed to a wider geometric landscape design. The design samples an industry leading example of urban agriculture as well as providing socialising areas and the potential for economic ventures in the form of vegetable production.
The site analysis undertaken prior to the design of the campus can be seen in the adjacent slideshow and the final presentation drops on the link above.
