A View Through Water
Writtle College, Essex

This highlights the connection made between the bar, FE games room and brook. The design is concentrated around the bar building and extents out to a wider, informal landscape.

Upon arrival into the garden a covered seating area is lined with walls of water from the above canopy. This adds interest to the landscape providing add aesthetic, sound and movement to the design. The area also includes an outdoor bar and BBQ for large events.

A connection is made to the bounding brook through the use of a seating deck. This provides an intimate socialising area that is accessed through a central boardwalk creating a vista through the garden.

'The design uses walls of water to frame the view across the landscape'
This project was centered around the re-design of the student bar garden at Writtle College, Chelmsford. The brief outlined a contemporary design that was flexible, provided covered seating and could cater for large events such as the annual Summer Ball. The client also specified the need for the relocation of the exisiting minibus compound to provide access to the brook bounding the site.
The design was driven by the inclusion of water and how the concept of viewing and framing can be introduced into the landscape. This resulted in the creating for a series of waterfalls from the roof of a coverd canopy. The space then opened up to a wider hard landscape area and large lawn border with raised planters. This provided a large felxible space for student events as well as providing a social centre to the campus.
